The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a timeless classic of American literature, first published in 1925. Set in the 1920s, the novel is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man from a well-to-do family who moves to Long Island's affluent West Egg community to pursue a career in bond sales. Through Nick's eyes, readers are introduced to the enigmatic Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and mysterious figure who hosts lavish parties at his mansion.

At its core, "The Great Gatsby" is a story of the American Dream, exploring themes of ambition, wealth, love, and the pursuit of happiness. Gatsby, driven by his love for the beautiful and unattainable Daisy Buchanan, becomes emblematic of the American Dream's illusion and the corrupting influence of materialism.

Fitzgerald's prose is celebrated for its lyrical beauty and keen observations of society, capturing the excesses and disillusionment of the Jazz Age. The novel's vivid imagery, evocative symbolism, and complex characters contribute to its enduring appeal and status as a literary masterpiece.

Through its exploration of themes such as the emptiness of wealth, the fleeting nature of time, and the impossibility of recapturing the past, "The Great Gatsby" offers profound insights into the human condition. Its tragic yet compelling narrative continues to resonate with readers, making it a staple of high school and college curricula and a perennial favorite among readers of all ages. Overall, "The Great Gatsby" remains a poignant and thought-provoking work that continues to captivate and inspire generations of readers.

David Copperfield - Charles Dickens

This is an iconic novel penned by Charles Dickens, considered a classic in English literature. The book follows the life and adventures of its titular character, David Copperfield, from his birth to adulthood. Here's a review of this timeless masterpiece:

The story is a bildungsroman, a coming-of-age narrative, tracing David Copperfield's life through various stages, from his troubled childhood to his eventual success as a writer. Dickens crafts a rich tapestry of characters, each with their own quirks and complexities, contributing to David's growth and experiences.

The novel touches on various themes, including the struggles of the poor, the impact of industrialisation on society, the significance of friendship, the resilience of the human spirit, and the quest for identity and belonging.

One of the book's strengths lies in its vivid and memorable characters, from the kind-hearted and wise Betsey Trotwood to the enigmatic and villainous Uriah Heep. Each character adds depth and color to the story, making it a captivating read.

Dickens' writing style is renowned for its vivid descriptions, intricate plots, and a blend of humor and pathos. He paints a vivid picture of Victorian England, portraying its social issues and disparities with skilful storytelling.

"David Copperfield" remains relevant today due to its timeless themes and relatable characters. It's a story that transcends its era, resonating with readers across generations.

It is a literary gem that offers not only a compelling narrative but also a reflection of the human condition. Dickens' ability to build a tale that combines heartache, humor, and hope has secured its place as a classic in literature.

Seven Years in Tibet - Movie

This is a cinematic adaptation of the memoir by Heinrich Harrer, depicting his experiences in Tibet during the years preceding World War II.

The film follows Harrer, played by Brad Pitt, an Austrian mountaineer who, after escaping a British internment camp in India, embarks on an arduous journey to Tibet, where he befriends the young Dalai Lama and becomes an influential figure in his life.

The movie beautifully captures the stunning landscapes of Tibet and offers a glimpse into its rich culture and traditions. It portrays Harrer's personal transformation, from a self-centered adventurer to a compassionate and enlightened individual influenced by his encounters with the Tibetan people and their spiritual leader.

Brad Pitt's performance and the cinematography received praise for effectively conveying the emotional depth of Harrer's journey and the cultural nuances of Tibet. Additionally, the film delves into themes of friendship, cultural exchange, and the clash between Western and Eastern ideologies.

This is an aesthetically stunning film that offers a captivating portrayal of a Westerner's transformative journey in Tibet and the profound impact of his friendship with the Dalai Lama. While it may take creative liberties with historical accuracy, it remains a compelling story that introduces audiences to the beauty and spirituality of Tibetan culture.

Schindler's List - Thomas Keneally

This book by Thomas Keneally is a powerful and harrowing historical novel based on the true story of Oskar Schindler, a German businessman who saved the lives of over a thousand Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. The novel chronicles Schindler's transformation from a profit-seeking industrialist to a compassionate saviour who used his factory as a haven for Jews, risking his life to protect them from the horrors of the Nazi regime.

Keneally's writing portrays the atrocities of the Holocaust with vivid detail and emotional resonance, depicting the brutality faced by the Jewish population and the profound acts of heroism that emerged during one of humanity's darkest periods. The narrative highlights the complexities of human nature, from the cruelty of the Nazi regime to the compassion and sacrifice exhibited by individuals like Schindler.

The book is an emotionally impactful and deeply moving account that sheds light on the horrors of the Holocaust while celebrating the courage and humanity of those who fought against it. Keneally's storytelling creates a haunting and unforgettable portrayal of the resilience of the human spirit amid unimaginable suffering.

"Schindler's List" is a poignant and significant work that serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of compassion, empathy, and standing up against injustice, making it a vital piece of literature that continues to resonate with readers worldwide.

Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austin

At its core, "Pride and Prejudice" tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet, an intelligent and spirited young woman, and her encounters with Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, a wealthy and reserved gentleman. The novel delves into the intricacies of social class, marriage, and the expectations placed upon individuals during this period. Austen's sharp social commentary is skillfully interwoven with her character development, creating a compelling narrative that draws readers in from the very first page.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Austen's writing is her ability to create vivid and multi-dimensional characters. Elizabeth Bennet shines as a protagonist who defies societal expectations and remains true to her convictions. Her wit and intelligence make her an engaging and relatable character, while Mr. Darcy's transformation from a seemingly aloof figure to a vulnerable and passionate man is both satisfying and heartwarming.

Author's skillful use of irony and satire adds depth and humor to the story. Through her clever dialogue and narrative voice, she subtly critiques the societal conventions of her time, particularly the emphasis on wealth and social status. The interactions between the characters are filled with subtle wordplay and layered meanings, making for delightful reading that rewards attentive readers.

Author's exploration of themes such as pride, prejudice, and the consequences of hasty judgments remains relevant to this day. The novel encourages readers to reflect on the dangers of making assumptions based on first impressions, highlighting the importance of overcoming preconceived notions and embracing personal growth and self-awareness.

Book is in its universal themes, memorable characters, and Austen's unparalleled wit make it an essential read for any lover of classic literature. Whether you are a long-time fan or discovering this novel for the first time, prepare to be enchanted by Austen's remarkable storytelling and to fall in love with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy all over again.

Super Deluxe

This is a multi starrer Tamil/Malayalam movie. I watched the Malayalam version based on a review by a friend. According to the IMDB, its a super hit movie with rating more 4 out of 5. I am wondering a few questions on my head. Please let me know if you know the answers

1. Why Veambu should think that she murdered her ex-lover when he died a natural death? Cheating on her husband is a different crime and murder should be a different crime for Vaembu. Why Mugil also even once didn't think that they are different?

2. Police playing villain is not accepted. That too when he tries to make Veambu agree to sleep with him. Why Mr.Mughil, though being an ordinary man limited by heroic conception, not even once rebel the idea or resist/fight the cop?

3. When Soori finds out his mother is a porn star, why would he want to kill her? Aren't porn stars human? Isn't there an empathetic angel to that as those for Shilpa?

4. When the boys break the TV,  Soori runs after his mother to kill her but injures himself and is put in hospital. Now, being a Good mother, Leela begs the doctor to operate on him. Would she not know the hospital needs to be paid before any procedure can start?

5. The friends of Soori are only worried about restoring the broken TVs. They never think of their friend in hospital?

6. Arputhan will not question God whether he is the only and the only person to be saved in Tsunami by God? Would he not imagine there can be many other people who might've survived tsunami just like him?

7. Shilpa(I mostly looked forward to this role played by Vijay Sethupathi, but only to be disappointed) being a trans woman do not know how the world will treat her if she allies with her son? She expects to be treated like a normal even after she declares she has consummated the cop and she thinks of him as her husband. What logic is this? In one place, she wants to be treated fairly, in the other place, she wants to disclose she has relationship with cop?

8. Coming to cop, why is the cop such an asshole?

9. Who is the alien and what she wants to do with the movie?

I could not relate to any of the characters. Finally it gave me a headache.

Well, when I read other reviews, they speak about the direction, screenplay, music, cinematography, acting all to be in excellent levels which would last an ever lasting impression on the viewers. But for me, it led to more questions.

The one and only thing I liked about the movie is Shilpa's son who does not know to call his father as mother or father but still wants her to be with him.

Ponniyin Selvan

Today I put down this massive and magnificent art of eminence by Kalki Krishnamurthy. Its massive because it comes in 2000+ pages in 4 volumes. Each page is a sheer joy of witnessing the grandeur of Chozha kingdom.

Vallavarayan Vandiyatheevan walks in the lanes and palaces of Thanjavur, Kanchi, Kadamboor, Kodumbalur, Madurai, strolls in the forests of western and southern Karnataka underneath the Kaveri river, rows in the Indian ocean between Rameswaram and Ilankai, fight wars, truces, take part in secret conspiracies, scandalises affirmations from kings, corners death threats, with luck escapes from precarious people and situations, laments the loss of a friend, craves for Kundavai yet, survives the trust placed on him. - Is he the Hero? No.

Arulmozhivarman or Ponniyin Selvan is the hero. He is believed to be saved by mother Kaveri herself when he was placed in the river and thats how he gets the name Ponniyin Selva. He is in Ilankai(Srilanka) waging war and is only 19. He is the second son of the most handsome king of Chola dynasty - Sundara Chola. His siblings are Aditya Karikalan and Kunduvai. Kunduvai is a lady protagonist sharing much of the spot light along with Vandiyatheevan.

The plot is eventful with many twists but the storyline is predictable though there are great many people involved. All conspires to one war and that war has to be waged.

The summary of the plot and the family tree and whos who is well reported in the wikipedia

I lived through the eyes of Vandiyatheevan all along with his vulnerabilities, love, sheepishness, shallowness, trickery, maturity and his hope for seeing good things. The books took me through those lanes and palaces that he walked by in a visual experience. I read the english version translated by Pavithra Srinivasan though I so much wanted to read the original script written in Tamil by Kalki (due to my illiteracy in Tamil).

Gunjan Saxena - The Kargil girl

This movie is in news for all the right reasons. Gunjan Saxena is the IAF flight lieutenant who went on to become the first woman pilot to fly the cheetah helicopters in war zone. She joined IAF in 1994 and took part in Kargil war in 1999 in evacuating wounded soldiers, aiding surveillance and transporting essential supplies. A great tribute goes out from my heart to her.

Now coming to the movie - Its the most acclaimed movie supposed to be showing the valiance of a woman in the time where woman were less privileged. But it irked me a bit. Instead of proving the mettle of Gunjan, movie focused more on the shallowness of men around her. Its not at intervals but the whole plot is the same. Starting with derogatory and non believing brother to the IAF co pilots and bosses. IAF has officially objected the depiction of this perspective. And Gunjan herself has confirmed that there was no such treatment from her male companions. If the story was to be made up, it could've been in a way which aspires women in general to pursue greater aspirations than to just fight for woman rights in a non woman organization. Repeatedly Gunjan gets vexed by her male counterparts and not in a single incident she stands up for herself. Any mediocre woman of this era knows when to stop tolerating the derision and to speak up, not waiting for a major event to happen.

It was surprising to see Pankaj Tripathi in the plot whose acting is as usual commendable. Jahnavi Kapoor looked a clown. Rest do their part - nothing noteworthy.

Shakuntala devi

The person Shakuntala Devi and the movie on her are both sensations garnering viewership all over the world.

When I was a 10 std kid, my math teacher inspired me towards the life of Shakuntala Devi. Later when I was preparing for campus placements in college, I read her book - "puzzles to puzzle you". Naturally this movie fell in my watch list attributing to the sophisticated AI that Amazon prime has built.

3 clear crisp messages that movie gives as far as I understand.

1. Stop being obsessed by "me, me, me, I, I, I and my, my, my".
(On a different stand point - you don't really matter as much as you think you matter).
Today in 2020's age, we are so swept away with a world full that talks about finding your voice and being on your own, loving yourself, living your passion such that you can excuse yourself for thrashing someone else's dreams, discovering your calling, being brave enough to express your authentic self etc. But this is all so wrong.

We are all bound by the rules of society and the law and if not, to a great extent, bound by the rules of family. These rules define austere limitations for expression of self. You need to find the balance between "living up for self" and breaking the rule. There needs to be an equilibrium  for "I", "him"(to all men in life) and "us".

2. Motherhood -
Aren't all mothers perfect? She loved you with all she could. There is no right or wrong.
Don't cry for the identity she gave you. If you don't like it, you have all the abilities and opportunities to change it.
Don't look at the mother as a mother but as a woman having her own dreams and calling.

3. Breaking the cycle of negativity -
There is an old saying that if you think bad of a person, be assured that he/she thinks bad of you too. This is no unknown magic. Negativity multiplies negativity. Just forgiving the person who wronged you is not enough. Think highly of him/her and appreciate the good things he/she has done to you. That way instead of having a neutral stand point, you make peace with him/her and win-win from both the sides.

Same goes with motherhood. Is motherhood a cycle where you pass on your curses (and blessings) to your lineage? From your mother to you, you to your daughter and she to her daughter? You just forgiving her would not be enough. If you like to be appreciated by your daughter, appreciate the benevolence of your mother.

Gantumoote (The baggage)

Spoiler: Watch this movie ONLY if you appreciate the rendition of love in it's most subtle ways.

The movie is about a teenage girl expressing her emptiness and fullness together and concurrently after  her young lover ends his life.

The movie takes you back to the school and gives you a high degree of nostalgia. Every scene is perfectly knit to fit the 90's time zone. What is different from the main stream kannada cinema and this is that the protagonist is a young girl who is not scared to have a mind of her own.

The movie talks about the teenage love, pressure of exams, mental and physical abuses that will cause long lasting ill effects, high school bullying, heart break, life long emptiness due to death of a loved one and so forth.

The acting by Teju Belavadi and Nischit Karodi is best in class. The scenes are just perfect with no scope to improve - especially the one where Meera comes to confront the death of Madhu when she touches the body of her dead lover. You really swallow a lump of pain when she turns back and heads home. The subtle movements and acting by both in the lead couple expound the fine drawn presentation of love. That factor is also the one that keeps you glued.

Here is a bit of Meera's(protagonist) mind chatter which gives you the taste of the sensibilities she harness.

Spider Man - Far from Home

Tony Stark - where are you?

The latest spider man movie post Stark's death is all about Tony Stark. Stark entrusts his own glasses to Peter Parker and it is delivered to Peter through Fury.

Meanwhile, Peter lives in a era of blip where the population is brought back to earth(from extinction) earlier than expected, Thanks to Avengers. Hence Peter is 16 and back at school where they plan a trip to Europe. He intends to express his love to his class mate MJ during the trip. There are numerous attacks on Peter and his friends while the trip is displacing from one city to other. Peter with the help from Beck saves the world. Beck is an old employee of Stark and avenges his own dismissal from employment by Stark. Peter realises this and tries to get back Stark's glasses he gave to Beck.

The movie is light hearted high school kinds. It is a relief after the high drama of the End Game. There are no twists or turns. It is plain good vs evil. The visual effects is scintillating with drones and technology. But spider man becoming the next IRON MAN? Thats asking too much of Tom Holland.

Pailwan and Sudeep

The movie begins with a little Krishna taking birth to abolish all the evil in the world. Krishna(Sudeep) is brought up by a good samaritan - Sunil Shetty famously known as sarkar. Sarkar is also a star pailwan in the local hood and wants little Krishna to win the national wrestling championship and bring pride and fame to his village.

Krishna caught between the girl he loves and the national championship, chooses the girl and takes the oath not wrestle anymore. During his pailwanish days, Krishna would have garnered quite a fan-ship and a few enemies also among who one is the King of one of the dynasties living near by. The king is constantly prying Krishna in to taking up wrestling again so he can beat Krishna. As usual there is drama and action. Children are involved which is not a good sight to see. To make the movie worth while, there is a twist that Krishna wants to help the homeless children to pursue their sports interests.

Sudeep is the highlight of the movie and the rest all play up their part fairly ok. The pace is slow and you whine when the movie gets over. Direction and screenplay are sloppy and make for an ordinary kannada movie.

chhichhore

This movie is a 3 idiots relived. A good hearted director Nitesh Tiwari has got his job right.

The message that the movies come with is

1. Do not force children to study to secure a seat in a college,
2. Let children have plan Bs and Cs,
3. Teach them to face failures
4. Loser/Winner tag is defined not by the result but rather the effort we put

In delivering the message, the cast has put up an awesome effort and won our hearts. The older crew in the cinema, though look redundant and pushed hard to look old, they dont fail to keep the frames rolling.

On one of the low days, I watched this movie. It felt a real refresher. Whats more, My son cried when they cried, rejoiced when they laughed and finished a big tub of pop corn.

The Lion King

A cute little lion cub takes on the destiny to become the king of the pride. A 100 recitals and enactments to my son and he finally gets it. Since the day, we watched the movie, its simba everywhere in my home. My son is gaga over the little lion and his mischief.

Simba is influenced by his uncle Scar to defame his father Mufasa and dethrone him. Simba loves his daddy though and does not understand the bad intentions of Scar.

Though the movie is in animation making it a children's choice, it gives profound wisdom to elder ones. The animation is first in class and the pictures and scenes(especially of little simba's eyes) will keep coming back to you even after you have left the cinema hall. The songs in between are too catchy and holds the children's' attention. Some of the wise things the movie has thought are

Believe in yourself and there will come a day when others will have no choice but to believe with you. - Mufasa

Look beyond what you see. - Rafiki

Love will find a way, anywhere we go. We’re home if we are there together. - Simba

Look, sometimes bad things happen — and there’s nothing you can do about it. So why worry? - Simba

It’s times like this my buddy Timon here says: you got to put your behind in your past. – Pumbaa

Oh yes, the past can hurt. But from the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it. – Rafiki

I laugh in the face of danger. – Simba

Being brave doesn’t mean you go looking for trouble. – Mufasa

Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. As king, you need to understand that balance and respect all the creatures, from the crawling ant to the leaping antelope. – Mufasa

It's the Circle of Life and it moves us all, through despair and hope, through faith and love, till we find our place on the path unwinding. - Rafiki,

The invisible guest

After an eventful day day before yesterday at office, to insulate myself from the events, I watched this movie on NetFlix.

Its the spannish original of our own bollywood movie Badla staring Amitabh Bachan and Tapsee Pannu. The original has a male protogonist instead of female as in the case of Badla. Its a crime thriller where a prestigious defense attorney - Virginia Goodman confronts the Spannish business man Adrian Doria for the murder of his secrete lover Laura Vidal and Daniel Garrido.

The story is a narrative between the attorney and the businessman. Its a bit off pace through out. It makes you think quickly and in all possibilities until the thruth is finally revealed. One would over think and look for a 4th culprit too, in which case the ending is disappointing.

Though I have not watched the actor's or director's any of the movies earlier, I can say the cast has done tremendously well.

On the side lines, I have been reading the "The collected short stories of Roald Dahl" at the same time, the scenes and people seem to interchange between the book and the movie in some strange way.

Iron Man

Tony Stark is a character one falls in love with as time goes. In the first, he is a cinematic play boy - rich and handsome, genius in science and a business man.

This movie is the first of the Iron Man series with Stark being shown as the newly appointed CEO of the Stark Industries that manufacture the weapons to wage wars and bring peace. He is in Afghanistan modelling one of the missiles that his company has made. He is ambushed while returning and taken for imprisonment in a cave.

He meets a scientist from Gulmira in the cave and asked to build a missile that will counter attack the weapon he displayed earlier. Stark manages to create a artificial heart for himself and an iron armour that helps him escape from the cave and the troops that captured him.

Once Stark is back in the US, he learns that his own and his father's partner Obadiah Stane is involved with the terrorist troops. He avenges Obadiah who also develops a iron man kind of armour with the help of his engineers. In all this mean time, he falls in love with his present assistant and future wife Pepper Pots.

The final battle between these two is a great watch. The arc reactor phenomenon is fantastic scene. The plot is curiosity grabber. Robert Downey Jr is the man to look for in this one and all the next movies to come for 10 years.

Dumbo - circus movie

Its a kids movie I watched with my toddler son in Playhouse PVR. Its the theatre that my son enjoyed more than the movie.

The movie is about mother child bonding. The mother jumbo is taken away from the little dumbo. The little dumbo has big fanny ears which helps him to fly. He is adored by two children at the circus who help him get to his mother.

The movie is an entertainer for older children to some extent. The plot is lengthy to withstand the interest. Some unnecessary threads take away the main intent. Above all, the movie is 3D which children generally cant bear.

After the movie experience, it felt like I could've done something better with the Saturday I had with my son.

Avengers - End Game

The Avenger drama has ended with Storky gone. Its a bad feeling to see Stork die.

The movie is once again a visual spectacle with a mega war between the avengers and the Thanos army. The whole of the Avengers unite to abolish Thanos from the universe. Hope he does not return from another universe.

Late Stan Lee makes a cameo in one of the scenes where he pledges to make love and not war while Stork strides ahead of Lee on a highway scene.

The energy is OK OK and appeals generally in the infinity saga. Cap America retires. There is a bunch of new entrants who might take the avengers to saving planets and universes to the next level.

The bit that really hurts is to see Stork's funeral. I love him more than 3000.

Hope from shawshank redemption

Last week, me and few friends were talking about having and deserving the best things in life. We were imagining ourselves to be the prison inmates of Shawshank gossiping about the new  entries and happy for the exits. Eventually we spoke about the "Hope" tonic that we missed.

Living without hope is the most terrible thing one can experience. We come and visualise the spectacle of life and consequentially vanish. Hope is what distinguishes a man from everything else.

Here are a few inspirational quotes on Hope from the movie

Hope is a good thing, may e the best of the things and no good thing ever dies - Andy

Salvation lies within - Warden Samuel Norton

Geology is a study of pressure and time. Thats all it takes - Pressure and Time. That and a goddamm poster! - Andy

I have to remind myself that some birds are not meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up does rejoice!! - Brooks

Hunter Killer

My fetish with submarine movies continues with this Gerard Butler movie called Hunter Killer. The title goes by the name of the submarine which is also the hero of the movie.

There is US submarine that goes missing when US is trying to snoop on the Russian ports. Gerard Butler is called to rescue the missing submarine. There is another team headed by Toby Stephens is sent to observe the Russian naval base. They find out that Russian president is imprisoned by the Russian defence minister.

Now the show turns in to action in rescuing the Russian president by US team on land and on Hunter Killer. Gerard Butler finds an abandoned Russian submarine and tries to resucue people in it. He gets to meet the Russian captain of the submarine.

On the land, in US, defence ministry plans to wage war on Russia on finding out the president's imprisonment while president is swiftly taken to Hunter Killer.

Hunter killer is attacked by the Russian forces headed by a destroyer war ship. The captian who trained the men on destroyer ship is in Hunter Killer. He along with Russian president call out to not attack the submarine but in vain.

The final show down happens when the Hunter Killer is attacked by forces on naval base. The destroyer war ship nullifies the attack and retaliate the naval base. The president is saved and there is happy ending.

The movie is high drama with a lot of nail biting moments. Gerard Butler delivers the best. Submarine is the main character to look for. Good weekend movie to watch out for.
